DAC Annual Report 2007

Division of Analytical Chemistry (Chairmen: Dr. Fritz Erni)

The goals and the priorities of the Division of Analytical Chemistry for 2007 were mainly concentrated on 5 main topics:

  • strengthen our international contacts
  • further improvement of the DAC web page and visibility in Chimia
  • the role of analytical science education in Swiss universities
  • mapping analytical science in Switzerland
  • strengthen and broaden the representation of analytical science in Switzerland

In early 2007 the Division Analytical Chemistry was formally approved to be co-owner of the journal ‘Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry’ (ABC) in a contract with Springer and the existing owner-societies in Europe. The goal of this financial commitment is to strengthen Analytical Chemistry in Europe with the support of a strong European Analytical Science journal. This international cooperation was further strengthened by the interest of the Italian analytical chemists to also cooperate with ABC. The formal negotiations with all the owners of ABC are ongoing to integrate our Italian colleagues.

In 2007 the ‘Highlights of Analytical Chemistry in Switzerland’ in Chimia got a very strong boost with high quality contributions. This was only possible thanks to the high intensity of work of Dr. Veronika Meyer as editor of the Highlights. We thank Veronika for her big effort and congratulate her on the success!

The board continued to work on the mapping of analytical science in Swiss Universities (ETH’s, Universities and Technical Universities) and reviewed the implementation of the Bologna model and the status of a Master in Analytical Science in academic education. The need of an analytical Master program was discussed, but no final conclusions are possible at this time. It is planned to continue the discussions with involved stakeholders during 2008.

As a tradition, the division offers a very strong educational program of courses in a broad range of fields of analytics. The courses to get updated and trained in analytical sciences were very well accepted by a broad range of experts. About 300 persons were trained in more than 50 courses. We thank the Training Team and all the trainers for the excellent program and the enormous work to make the program successful.

The board of the division has the clear vision that Analytical Chemistry should be broadened to Analytical Science. To articulate this attitude 3 new members were elected to the DAC board to represent a broad expertise in the field of clinical analytical chemistry, functional genomic center and pharmaceutical sciences.

As chairmen of the DAC I would like to thank all board members for the support, dedication and excellent cooperation. I would also like to thank all our division members for their support and cooperation in 2007.
